Some 1250 delegates from 79 countries are gathering in Thailand to mark the observance of the United Nations Day of Vesak, May 4-6, unworried about the countrys recent political unrest. They believe that politics does not impact the conference. Most Ven. Prof. Dr. Phra Dharmakosajarn announced that Thailand is honored to host the conference during May 4-6, 2009. The Thai government and the Supreme Sangha Council has assigned Mahachulalongkornrajavidyalaya University (MCU) to organize and conduct the conference. More than 5,000 Buddhist leaders, scholars and monks from 80 countries accepted the initial invitation to attend the conference, including religious experts and scholars from different denominations. Delegates from overseas, local monks, and scholars from Buddhist organizations worldwide will join the conference, together with local and international media. Approximately 1,500 MCU, students and faculty with participate, plus a range of VIPs, including officials from Thailand and the United Nations. The number of delegates from overseas proves that Thailands political crisis has not negatively impacted the conference, Phra Dharmakosajarn said. |
